MIXTAPE PRESENTS JAPANESE POPSTARS (GUNG-HO!) + GILES WALKER |
| |
| Japanese Popstars are not as their name suggests. They are in fact three blokes from Northern Ireland who are making the kind of big-room electro that makes Erol Alkan throw off his headphones and start pointing at the CDJ when playing it. Fresh from supporting Klaxons and Hadouken!, their latest EP, including the laser gun-sampling "Delboy's Revenge" left the Miami WMC as wet and traumatised as a post-tsunami Phuket. The lads, signed to Gung-Ho, are now booked in for Glastonbury, Wireless, Oxegen and NOW Snafu, Aberdeen. Pop down and say "Konichiwa".
“They’re gonna be riding high in the charts before long... Cut from the same cloth as Orbital and Underworld, theirs is a sky-skimming stadium-sized version: the kind of tracks built to make an entire field of ravers jump in unison. They’re something special...” - DJ MAG.

MIXTAPE - DUKE DUMONT |
| |
| Duke Dumont, has made a big splash in the scene, equally known for his memorable DJ sets as he is for his "catch you off guard" productions. In 2006 DD was crowned Diesel U Music champion, beating thousands of other producers to be considered the best unsigned producer in the world by a host of music industry judges, consisting of the likes of 2 Many DJs. Previous winners for this award include producers such as Mylo and DJ Yoda. Duke Dumont rose to prominence in 2007 with the release of Lean & Bounce, featured on his debut EP "Regality" on Turbo Recordings. A fusion of low pitched vocal hooks, with a finely tuned techno lead, combined with an unbeatable bassline, creating one of the dance records of the year. Championed by the likes of Erol Alkan, Simian Mobile Disco, Switch, Jesse Rose and literally thousands more. As well as being referred to as a producer, equal sentiment can be placed on his DJ ethic. Holding down regular sets at the likes of Fabric, Razzmatazz and Bugged Out, whilst touring from Australia to the United States, Canada and the whole of Europe within the last year. All this makes Duke one of the most traveled and in-demand DJs in the UK. His ability to blend deep house and techno, whilst contrasting tensions defines him as one of the biggest underground DJs on the circuit, backed up by future shows consisting of We Love @ Space and The Panoramabar.Currently riding high off the back of his latest remix of the Mystery Jets "Two Doors Down", it has already been touted as an anthem for this summer, gaining support from many, with Laurent Garnier championing the mix - " I absolutely loooove the Duke Dumont Reconstruction, it is awesome. I will playlist on the radio and hammer it in the clubs."

MIXTAPE - STREETLIFE DJS |
| |
| Streetlife Djs first graced the Snafu stage back at the tail end of last year, much unknown faces at the time, they still managed to rock out harder than a Dave Clark set; and now thanks to a shed load of hard work by the production and dj duo, the boys have releases out on Kitsune, as well as gaining the DJ Mag 4 1/2 out of 5 stars seal of approval on latest release “Wanna Be Starting Something” (out on White, with only a couple of hundred of this limited edition vinyl pressed!)
So who are this traffic stopping team? Stewart Rowell and Louis Gaston are somewhat knowledgeable in their arena, with over 25 years turntable experience between them, and a blatant disregard for music genres. To explain – think Soulwax meets Coldcut meets Sasha and Digweed and you’re in the right ballpark… if there is such a place?! There really isn’t a musical boundary that the Streetlife DJs won’t cross. A Streetlife set is like one big lesson in the history of dance music…in one night! These guys are the UK’s very own 2ManyDJs!
Their sets take influences from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Andrew Weatherall, David Bowie, Daft Punk, Whitey and Simian Mobile Disco on board and re-work them into their own unique style and sound, with special re-edits featuring intense blasts of samples, accapellas and sound fx, to each track giving them that unique Streetlife touch. Compliment that with the most cutting edge electronic dance and alternative music, with some of the slickest mixing and programming you’re likely to hear and the result is something really quite exciting and definitely very refreshing.
Their attitude is quite simple – they work in the entertainment industry – they want to entertain. They’re not doing it for themselves or just to play their own records, and they don’t feel like they have to conform to the latest trend, or follow what Pete Tony played on Friday night. They want to put smiles on faces and hands in the air. Who cares if you mix up all these different music genres? Non-conformist? Maybe, but you know what, it really works, just ask Soulwax or The Glimmers; and Streetlife DJs are throwing a distinctly homegrown London/UK edge on it.
Get ready for the Streetlife party, you’re all invited…see you down the front, yeah?!

THE DEEP END WITH TOMOKI TAMURA + FUNKY TRANSPORT |
| |
| Tomoki started Dj-ing in 1999 in his native Japan and his original blend of sweet and aggressive flavours quickly marked him out as one of the most promising young Japanese DJs of his generation. He went on to hold residencies at some of Japan’s top clubs, playing alongside top international DJs such as Derrick May, Doc Martin, Lil’louis,Timmy Regisford, Joe Claussell, Danny Krivit, Blaze, Larry Heard, Daniel Wang, Kerri Chandler, Jerome Sydenham, Ron Trent and Osunlade to name but a few. Regular mix sessions for the radio stations Shibuya FM and Osaka Cable only added to what was already fast becoming a cult following and the nation-wide commercial release of a successful series of mix albums on tape (“the Groove Café Series”) was well received by both fans and critics alike, further cementing his reputation as one of the top young DJ’s in Japan’s underground house scene. In 2004 he moved to London where he has continued to rock the floor in top venues such as Ministory of sound,Turnmills, the Cross, The Key, AKA, 54, the Notting Hill Arts Club, Herbal and Cargo to name but a few. He guests at Faith (regarded by many discerning house aficionados as the capital’s no.1 party) and current residencies include his very own creations “Holic” at AKA and “Geisha Disco” at the Notting Hill Arts Club. Within a few months of arrival at its new home of AKA Bar, Holic was already a resounding success, rapidly becoming one of London’s busiest Thursday night parties. Hosted by his very own DJ collective “the Geisha Disco Boyz” and supported by “Kikiorix”, guest DJ’s have included Andrew Weatherall,X-Press2, Jimpster, Jim Masters, Pete Heller, Terry Farley, Spektrum and Milton Jackson with many more in the pipeline. Tomoki’s trademark fusion of deep, tech, electro, minimal and soulful influences has won him many admirers and he has graced our very own airwaves as the first ever Japanese DJ on Ministry of Sound Radio while currently holding a weekly slot on House FM. Simultaneously tough and soulful, dark and uplifting, - his style retains more than enough depth and technique to satisfy the fussiest of house-heads without losing the sort of funk and groove that keeps the dance floor rammed and rocking. March 2008 saw his debut as an artist with the release of the track “Yurikamome” (on Pild Records) to critical acclaim from the legendary Laurent Garnier himself. Its not just an England / Japan thing either, many places in between have felt the Tomoki effect; he has guest DJ’ed at parties in Berlin, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Belarus and Turkey. With a few notable exceptions, resident / ex-pat Japanese talent has always been thin on the ground in the West… but with Tomoki Tamura and the Geisha Disco Boyz transcending the divide, perhaps the UK club scene has at last found its very own ambassador both to and from the Land of the Rising Sun.

Mom...The Video Broke Presents Recloose + Martin Jay |
| |
| Recloose’s musical roots trace back to eight years of studying music and playing jazz saxophone, later shifting his focus to the art of mixing, cutting and dicing vinyl whilst at college in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His eclectic DJ sets, which were first heard on college radio, have led Recloose to become an in-demand DJ, playing at clubs and festivals around the world. Having spent time performing as a turntablist for both Carl Craig’s Innerzone Orchestra, and the more esoteric Uri Caine ensemble, Recloose’s musical activities have always been remarkably diverse. This sonic liberalism, and ensuing trans-global travel, have provided Recloose with an impeccable musical palette to work from. Since the fateful meeting with Carl Craig, Recloose has developed into a true standout of Detroit’s musical litter. The past 7 years have seen a number of groundbreaking 12’s released, a mix CD for Belgian label Eskimo, and a host of remixes for the likes of Herbert, Tei Towa, MJ Cole and Clara Hill. Recloose, consistently gathering musical momentum, released his debut album ‘Cardiology’‚ on Planet E / !K7 in 2002, to large critical acclaim. On a trip to Wellington, New Zealand in 2000, where he performed as part of the city’s international jazz festival, Recloose fell in love with the people, and country itself, and following the release of Cardiology, embarked on the lengthy process of relocating himself and studio to the Kapiti Coast. Summer 2005 saw the release of Recloose's second album and debut on Peacefrog, ‘Hiatus On The Horizon’, an album that encompasses live instrumentation and soul-fuelled vocals. It stands as an unlikely musical fusion of the sounds of the South Pacific and the not so distant memories of the Motor City, and captured the imaginations of many a listener with floor stompers like ‘Dust’, featuring Fat Freddy’s Drop vocalist Joe Dukie.

MIXTAPE - PAUL WOOLFORD |
| |
| After his sell out gig in at Snafu in 2006, we’ve been waiting with baited breath for the return of Paul Woolford. Paul, also known as production whizz Bobby Peru, has been an avid buyer of vinyl since the tender age of 8, and with a deep-seated passion for music, he is what you might call a vinyl junkie. His impeccable credentials include being signed to Ralph Lawson’s 20:20 Vision, Underwater, Junior Boys Own, Subliminal, Soma’s Freelance Science imprint, and most recently Mark Brown’s Cr2 label and Nic Fanciulli’s Saved label. His style and attitude is slightly different to most, and he has developed a unique sound that sets his studio productions aside from the crowd and it’s no exaggeration to say that Woolford is up there amongst some of the most original producers in electronic music right now. On top of a prolific studio output - around 100 releases to date - Paul’s DJ diary is packed out with dates booked around the globe, and he has built a name for himself amongst the very best. In fact, after his set to a 20,000 strong crowd at Serbia’s Exit festival this summer Danny Tenaglia gave him the accolade of being his “new favourite DJ”. Massively passionate about making music, Paul dedicates hours to production time and has proved that he has the ability to actually create a genre-defining sound. Twisted monster ‘Erotic Discourse’ became 20:20’s biggest biggest hit to date, selling over 10,000 copies and capturing the imagination of DJs across the board with support from The Chemical Brothers, Richie Hawtin and DJ Hell to Francois Kevorkian, Trevor Jackson and Erol Alkan. Not only has Woolford shown his skills on 12”s, he has also proved himself to be a highly credible and successful album artist. After his massively well-received debut Death of a Player in 2002, Woolford is back with superb follow-up ‘The Truth’ recently released on 20:20. The highly acclaimed Death of .. received 5/5 reviews across the board, with many magazines correctly predicting that Bobby Peru would become a force to be reckoned on the cutting edge of electronic music. In the last few years, those predictions have been on the money, with superb productions on some of the hottest labels around, including his Body Double series on own label ‘Intimacy’. After a few years perfecting his skills in the studio and road-testing his sounds as a DJ, Woolford has brought this experience to the table, consolidated it and created a superb second album. ‘The Truth’ is out there.
Paul Woolford returns to Snafu, after way, way too long - If you missed him first time round, don’t miss him.

MIXTAPE - RITON |
| |
| Riton - pronounced ‘Reeton’ and French street slang for “Henry” - is one of the most versatile, creative and charasmatic producers around. Currently hailed by the underground as the ‘Producer’s Producer’, Laurent Garnier, Trevor Jackson, Richard Dorfmeister and Erol Alkan, to name but a few, are avid fans. Starting his musical career at Manchester’s Grand Central Records, Riton has become well known for exhibiting his penchant for twisted beats, with his singles on Get Physical and Souvenir to his new wave remixes for everyone from Datarock and Tiefschwarz to Robbie Williams and Simian Mobile Disco. Notable productions include “Anger Man” and his extended dub of The Mystery Jets’ “The Boy Who Ran Away”. This summer, Riton throws us yet another musical curve-ball with his third album, ‘Eine Kleine Nacht Muzik!’ released on Modular, which sees him step away from today’s electronic sounds, and instead taking inspiration of the sumptuously spacey Krautrock of the 70’s and 80’s. Eine Kleine Nacht Musik is Riton’s brilliant take on this era and sound. Taking the listener on a trip down the autobahn, and is one of this years most elegantly assured, magnificently dreamy albums. Equally at home on the stage, as in the studio, Riton is a regular at Europe’s most prestigious clubs, including Fabric, The End and Bugged Out in the UK, Panorama Bar and Weekend in Berlin, The Rex and Triptyque in Paris, We Love at Space in Ibiza and many more. In 2005, Henry started the Gucci Sound System with Ben Fat Trucker and run their own nightclub, called Druzzi’s Baltimore Rave Club in Shoreditch, London. Hopefully Henry will feel right at home in our our little den of iniquity then.
Expect the unexpected as Riton takes a busman’s holiday to Snafu.

MIXTAPE - JORIS VOORN |
| |
| One for the post-Detroit generation, this is going to be a roadblock!
Joris Voorn is a producer and DJ from Rotterdam, and having been raised in a musical family, music naturally became an intrinsic part of his life. Electronic music was a natural progression for Joris, and in mid-90’s, after developing a more focused interest in house and techno, Joris invested in an MC-303 Groovebox experimenting with synth sounds and drumloops. In 2000 he built a small studio to produce his own music, which led to his first release - ‘Muted Trax Pt.1’ on Keynote, a massive success hailed by Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, DJ Rush, Technasia and many more.
In 2004 he released the two ‘The Lost Memories’ EPs which included the big dancefloor cuts ‘Missing’ and ‘Incident’, the latter of which became one of the most hammered anthems of the year, charted in almost every dance magazine worth its salt, made No. 1 in Mixmag’s Techno singles chart, was playlisted by John Peel and was championed by Carl Cox. Joris then released his debut CD album, ‘Future History’ on the Sino label, which encompasses 3 years of ideas and inspiration, and is a seamless soundscape which affirmed his arrival as one of the most relevant techno producers around.
In 2006 the first release under his own ‘Green’ label, named ‘MPX_309’, was a crossover techno work, which was played out by techno, minimal, house and trance DJs alike. His second album, ‘From A Deep Place’ was released worldwide in June last year. This piece of work features a broad spectrum of electronic music, ranging from atmospheric interludes to broken beats, house and deep soulful techno. Received enthusiastically by the electronic music community, the focus point of the music is the listener rather than the dancer, however, some of the tracks were edited to more DJ friendly tracks for the vinyl release of the album. Together with his friend Edwin Oosterwal, Joris also established the ‘Rejected’ record label at the end of 2006. Their first EP, featuring ‘SL3’and ‘Cliché’, became an instant success and was played out by almost every self-respecting DJ around the globe. As a DJ and live performer Joris Voorn has joined an elite group of international DJs whose musical talent has acquired global appeal. He has performed across Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Australia, Russia, Brazil, Colombia, US and, now finally, Aberdeen.
